The outdoor unit absorbs heat from the air and transfers it to a coolant.

A compressor raises the coolant's temperature.

The coolant heats water in a reserve tank through a heat exchanger.

Hot water circulates to radiators and faucets.

Cold water returns to the reserve tank.

The coolant cools in the water and flows back to the outdoor unit for reheating.

The outdoor unit draws air over a heat exchanger to transfer heat to the coolant.

The coolant turns into a warm vapour due to the heat.

A compressor increases the vapour's temperature and density.

The hot vapour flows to the indoor unit.

The coolant cools back into a liquid.

An expansion valve releases more heat, creating a liquid-vapour mix.
